What Is Tooth Erosion and How Can You Prevent it?

Jan 11, 2023

An emergency dentist encounters many people with tooth erosion problems. Tooth erosion is dangerous to your oral health and can result in extreme dental pain. According to the World Health Organization, about 16% of the United States population has serious cases of tooth erosion, and the United States comes in third on the list of countries worldwide with tooth erosion problems. An emergency dentist can get you out of pain, but you need to do your part to proactively stop erosion.

What Is Tooth Erosion?

Tooth erosion is a loss of the tooth shape. It may mean that your molars are worn out, or your front teeth are thinner. It can be a condition that affects every tooth in your mouth. There are different causes of tooth erosion, but there will be some sensitivity in all cases, and the risk of cavities is heightened.

What Causes Tooth Erosion?

There are two causes of tooth erosion. The first is mechanical. How you chew and whether you grind your teeth are mechanical conditions that can cause erosion. The second is due to the chemicals you put into your body. The foods that you eat and the beverages that you drink can contribute to erosion. For example, a diet high in citric acid-containing foods and beverages can wear away the enamel on your teeth and cause erosion.

How Can You Prevent Erosion?

Your dentist can look at your teeth and tell if they're eroding. Your dentist can also recommend repairing your teeth and preventing further erosion. You may be fitted with a mouth guard if you grind your teeth, and the dentist may also ask you to make some dietary changes. There may be fluoride treatments that can help, but ultimately, you'll have to make some changes with your dentist's support to end the erosion.

Signs You May Have Tooth Erosion

The enamel on your teeth is a protective coating, and when the enamel has been compromised through erosion, your teeth may become very sensitive to both hot and cold temperatures. If you find yourself in constant dental pain, your teeth have a clear appearance in some areas, or you notice your teeth becoming increasingly yellow, you may be experiencing tooth erosion.
